About the Show
Phony is an upcoming half-hour dark comedy-mystery television series created, written, and directed by Nick Paley for Hulu, produced by 20th Television alongside executive producers Connie Britton, Drew Goddard (The Good Place, The Martian), Sarah Esberg, and co-showrunner Anthony King. The series stars Emmy nominee Connie Britton (The White Lotus, Friday Night Lights) and rising talent Sam Nivola (White Noise, The White Lotus).
The story centers on Sonny (Sam Nivola), a high school teenager who survives a harrowing car accident only to wake up in the hospital consumed by a chilling and unshakeable conviction: his beloved, endlessly supportive mother Ellen (Connie Britton) has been replaced by an impostor. As Sonny investigates every subtle detail, uncharacteristic glance, and awkward conversation around the house, he descends into a darkly comic spiral of suburban paranoia. Blending sharp existential satire with psychological mystery, Phony unpacks the fraught divide between how teenagers and adults perceive reality, exploring Capgras delusion through a humorous and touching lens of adolescent identity.
